ACD Homestay

Stay with a local family in Chumkriel village, five minutes from Kampot, with proceeds supporting the free school next door.

Sothy and Chenda have been running ACD Homestay in Chumkriel village, five minutes from Kampot by tuk-tuk, since well before it became a known option for visitors. Their family, including their children Heng and Bot, who all speak excellent English, takes guests in as part of the household rather than as hotel residents. Next door is the Chumkriel Language School, which Sothy founded in 2005 to provide free education to rural children in the area. Twenty percent of every package booking goes directly to support the school.

The base rate is $10 per person per night, with optional meals, laundry, and bicycles. Packages give more structure: the Local Experience ($50, two nights) includes a market visit, school lunch, and family dinner; the Cycle & Stay ($70, three nights) adds a guided countryside loop. Longer-stay volunteers can join the school’s teaching program for a week or more.

Getting there

ACD Homestay is in Chumkriel village, about 5 minutes by tuk-tuk from central Kampot. It sits near the salt fields and within easy reach of the pepper farms, making it a natural base for a countryside day rather than just an overnight stop.

What to expect

Private wooden bedrooms with fans and mosquito nets, shared balconies, coconut and fruit trees, bicycles, hot showers, and WiFi. Meals are optional but worth adding: breakfast and dinner are homemade and eaten with the family. Guests can visit school classes, join a meal preparation session, or simply use the homestay as a quieter alternative to staying in town.

Best time to visit

Year-round, but the countryside changes with the season. Dry months are easier for cycling and village walks. The green season brings active rice farming and a different kind of beauty in the fields. Either way, staying overnight rather than arriving in the afternoon heat makes the most of the experience.
